Milan, 5 November (LaPresse) – "He had a blood clot, his brain was deprived of oxygen and his chances of survival are very low. I hope he wakes up." With these dramatic words on the programme Le Iene, Erika Bufano recounted on 17 October the difficult time her husband Achille Polonara went through after undergoing a bone marrow transplant at the Sant'Orsola Hospital in Bologna to fight acute myeloid leukaemia. Fortunately, after ten days, Polonara finally woke up and the Le Iene reporter waited for him outside the hospital. The former Italian international was given permission to return home occasionally, where he was able to hug his daughters again. The Le Iene report recounts the basketball player's entire journey, before and after the transplant. In the days following the operation, Polonara's condition gradually worsened, until 17 October, when his wife called the correspondent from Le Iene and informed him that her husband had fallen into a coma.
