Rome, Jan. 4 (LaPresse) – Switzerland has taken a 1–0 lead over Italy in the Group C tie concluding day 3 of the United Cup at Perth’s RAC Arena, the mixed-team competition that has ushered in the new international tennis season. In the women’s singles, world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini was defeated 6–4, 6–3 in one hour and 52 minutes by world No. 11 Belinda Bencic. The two had previously faced each other four times (tied 2–2), with the Italian winning the two most recent meetings, most recently in the quarter-finals in Ningbo last October, in three sets.
