Rome, 6 January (LaPresse) – A 2-1 victory over France was not enough: Italy is out of the United Cup, the mixed team competition that kicked off the new international tennis season. In the match that opened the challenge at the Rac Arena in Perth during the night in Italy, Flavio Cobolli missed two match points, eventually losing 7-5 in the third set to Arthur RinderKnech. The subsequent victories of Jasmine Paolini over Leolia Jeanjean in the women's singles 6-2 6-2 and Sara Errani-Andrea Vavassori over Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah-Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (6) 7-6 (6) in the mixed doubles were useless, except for the spectacle. To qualify as the best second-placed team in the Perth group, the Azzurri – defeated on Sunday by Switzerland, who finished first in Group C – would have had to win 3-0 against their French cousins (already eliminated from the tournament) and lose a maximum of one set overall. Argentina will therefore advance to the quarter-finals against Bencic and Wawrinka's Switzerland.
