Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), 19 Feb (LaPresse/AP) – Brazil's attorney general, Paulo Gonet, has filed charges against former president Jair Bolsonaro for attempting a coup d'état in order to remain in power after his defeat in the 2022 elections.Gonet alleges that Bolsonaro and 33 other people participated in a plan to retain power despite his defeat against current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Last November, the federal police presented the prosecutor with an 884-page report describing the plan, which, according to the charges, involved systematically sowing distrust in the electoral system among the population, drafting a decree to give the plot a semblance of legality, and pressurising the military leadership to adhere to the plan and incite a revolt in the capital.
