Toronto (Canada), March 14 (LaPresse/AP) – Mark Carney has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Canada. The former central banker, 59, succeeds Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January but remained in office until the Liberal Party elected a new leader.

Carney will be tasked with leading his country through the trade war sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has also expressed his intention to annex Canada to the United States.

The newly appointed Prime Minister is expected to call general elections in the coming days or weeks. Carney stated that he is ready to meet with Trump if the latter shows "respect for Canadian sovereignty."
