Brussels, March 17 (LaPresse) – The European Union is evacuating burn victims from a nightclub fire in North Macedonia. The EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre, as reported in a note by the European Commission, has made contact with the civil protection authorities in North Macedonia to offer solidarity and support after the fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday, March 16, at a nightclub in Kocani, killing 59 people and injuring more than 155.
North Macedonia activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, requesting assistance to evacuate 15 patients with severe burns. In a swift response, 9 European countries (Croatia, Greece, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Lithuania, Hungary, Luxembourg, and Norway) immediately offered assistance through the mechanism. Several patients have already been evacuated to Hungary by Luxembourg, and Romania is transporting patients to Lithuania. The EU is now coordinating the transport of additional patients to countries offering care and remains in close contact with national authorities in North Macedonia, ready to mobilize further assistance if necessary.
