Milan, March 23 (LaPresse) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called elections for April 28 during a press conference, reports the BBC. Carney stated that he wants "a strong and positive mandate from my fellow Canadian citizens" and added that there will be a five-week election campaign before the vote. The ruling Liberals, of whom Carney and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are members, seemed headed for a historic electoral defeat this year—until U.S. President Donald Trump declared a trade war on Canada. Trump has repeatedly stated that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. Trump's near-daily attacks on Canada's sovereignty have angered Canadians and sparked a wave of nationalism that has boosted the Liberals' polling numbers.
