Rome, 27 March (LaPresse) – The Knesset, Israel's parliament, has approved a controversial bill that changes the composition of the Judicial Selection Committee. The bill – the Jewish state media explain – removes the two representatives of the Israeli Lawyers Association currently on the nine-member Judicial Selection Committee, which appoints all judges, and replaces them with one lawyer chosen directly by the majority coalition and another chosen by the opposition. Critics argue that the bill, which will only come into force in the next legislature, will politicise the appointments of judges. The opposition boycotted the final votes on the bill and MPs walked out of the plenary session.
