Taipei (Taiwan), Apr 1 (LaPresse/AP) – The Chinese military has announced large-scale exercises in the waters around Taiwan. The joint exercises involve naval, air and missile forces and are intended to be a ‘stern warning and strong restraint against Taiwan independence,’ explained the spokesman for the Chinese military's Eastern Theatre Command. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence said it had spotted 19 Chinese navy ships in the waters surrounding the island in the past 24 hours and detected the movement of the aircraft carrier Shandong in Taiwan's identification zone.
