Strasbourg (France), April 2 (LaPresse) – Hungary should reconsider its assembly law (which bans Pride events) and refrain from adopting legislative proposals that threaten the human rights of LGBTI people. This request was made in a letter addressed to the President of the Hungarian National Assembly, László Kövér, by the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O'Flaherty.

"I respectfully urge the members of the Hungarian National Assembly to reconsider the recently adopted amendment to the law on the right of assembly and to refrain from adopting the proposed constitutional and other amendments addressed in this letter. I recommend engaging with national and international partners, including the Council of Europe, on how to best protect children's rights in full compliance with international human rights standards, including the human rights of LGBTI people," the letter states.

Hungary has been a member of the Council of Europe since November 6, 1990.
