Jerusalem, 2 Apr. (LaPresse/AP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Israel will create a new security corridor in Gaza. Netanyahu called it the ‘Morag corridor’, using the name of an Israeli settlement that was once located between Rafah and Khan Younis, suggesting that it will run between the two cities in the south of the Strip. Israel controls a buffer zone along the entire Gaza border, which has been significantly expanded since the beginning of the war against Hamas in 2023, and recently ordered the complete evacuation of the southern city of Rafah. Israel maintains that the buffer zone is necessary for its security, while the Palestinians consider it a land grab that further restricts the Strip, where some 2 million people live. ‘We are increasing the pressure step by step, so that they will hand over our hostages. And the longer they don't hand them over, the more the pressure will increase, until they do,’ Netanyahu said. Last month the Israeli army regained control of the Netzarim corridor, which divides northern Gaza from the south, after Israeli forces had withdrawn from the corridor as part of the ceasefire.
