Milan, 19 April (LaPresse/AP) – The US Supreme Court has blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in North Texas under an 18th century war law. In an order, the Court enjoined the Trump administration from deporting Venezuelans held at the Bluebonnet detention centre ‘until further order of this Court’. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. The High Court acted on an emergency appeal by the American Civil Liberties Union, arguing that immigration authorities appeared intent on restarting deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.The Supreme Court had stated in early April that deportations could only proceed if those about to be deported had the opportunity to argue their case in court and were given ‘a reasonable time’ to challenge pending deportations. In the order, the Court enjoined the Trump administration from deporting the Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet detention centre ‘until further order of this Court’.
