Srinagar (India), April 22 (LaPresse/AP) – Multiple deaths are feared following an attack by gunmen who opened fire on tourists in the Indian region of Kashmir. Officials reported the incident, and police labeled it a “terrorist attack,” blaming Pakistani militants fighting Indian control. “This attack is far more significant than any other assault on civilians we’ve seen in recent years,” wrote Omar Abdullah, the region’s top official, on social media. “The death toll is still being verified, so I won’t go into details,” he added. According to early reports, gunmen opened fire mostly on Indian tourists visiting the Baisaran meadow, about five kilometers from the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, in the region contested between India and Pakistan. Police said several tourists sustained gunshot wounds and were being taken to hospital. Police and soldiers have sealed off the area and launched a manhunt for the attackers. The assault coincided with a four-day visit to India by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
