Madrid (Spain), 22 April (LaPresse) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez today presented a new industrial and technological plan for the security and defence of Spain and Europe worth €10.47 billion, which will enable the Iberian country to reach the threshold of 2% of GDP for defence spending this year. The plan, approved today by the Council of Ministers, will be sent to Brussels tomorrow. Sanchez explained in a press conference that the plan aims to ‘strengthen Spain's security and defence’, ‘reindustrialise and give new technological impetus to the Spanish economy’, ‘fulfil the commitments made’ to NATO and ‘consolidate Spain as a reliable member of the EU’. The plan includes investments to improve the working conditions and equipment of Spanish soldiers, investments to improve telecommunications and cybersecurity capabilities by creating a ‘digital shield’ for Spain, and the manufacture and purchase of military equipment. Sanchez has guaranteed that most of the money mobilised, around 87% of the total investment, ‘will remain in Spain’, with the rest going to EU countries and ‘only 5%’ going to non-EU countries.
