Istanbul (Turkey), 23 Apr (LaPresse/AP) – No serious injuries were immediately reported following the preliminary 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Istanbul. However, more than 150 people were hospitalised with injuries sustained while trying to escape from buildings, the Istanbul governor's office said. The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey, with its epicentre about 40 kilometres southwest of Istanbul, in the Sea of Marmara. It was felt in the neighbouring provinces of Tekirdag, Yalova, Bursa and Balikesir and in the city of Izmir, about 550 kilometres south of Istanbul. There were several aftershocks, including one of magnitude 5.3. ‘Due to panic, 151 citizens were injured by jumping from heights,’ the Istanbul governor's office said in a press release.
