Belgrade (Serbia), May 1 (LaPresse/AP) – Thousands took to the streets in Serbia today to mark six months since the November 1 collapse that killed 16 people when a roof gave way at the Novi Sad railway station—a tragedy that demonstrators blame on rampant corruption. Anti-corruption protests have been ongoing for six months, shaking the presidency of Aleksandar Vucic. Labor unions joined university students in Belgrade, the Serbian capital, calling for changes to labor and strike laws as part of May Day demonstrations. In the northern city of Novi Sad, residents laid flowers and lit candles outside the central station where the collapse occurred. Serbia has formally applied for EU membership, but its accession process has recently stalled due to Vucic’s increasingly authoritarian rule.
