Beijing (China), May 4 (LaPresse) – Two boats carrying about 70 people capsized in the Wu River, in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou, on Sunday afternoon, leaving around 20 people missing. By Sunday evening, rescuers had pulled 50 people from the water, according to the official news agency Xinhua, but more are still being searched for. The boats capsized after a sudden storm with rain, hail, and strong winds struck the Wu River, a tributary of the Yangtze, one of China’s two longest rivers. In a video shared by state media, a man can be seen performing CPR on another person lying on a boat. An eyewitness told the state news outlet Beijing News that the waters were deep, but some people managed to swim to safety. However, the storm hit suddenly, and thick fog obscured the river’s surface.
