Milan, May 4 (LaPresse) – "My dear brothers and sisters, from here and everywhere, together we made history today. We are approaching an exceptional result, far beyond what the system’s TV networks are showing, networks that have so far only stubbornly fueled division, spread poison, and distorted everything we've said. In other words, they did what they do best: spread lies. I congratulate you – you are winners! Today the Romanian people voted! Today the Romanian people spoke! It's time to be heard." These were the words of far-right candidate George Simion in a video shot from his office and posted on social media. Exit polls place him in the lead in the first round of Romania’s presidential elections with about 33% of the vote. "I want democracy. I want normalcy. And I have one goal: to return to the Romanian people what was taken from them. To put simple, honest, and dignified people back at the center of decision-making," Simion added. "I want to thank you all – you were amazing! I love you and carry you in my heart. We’ll see each other again after the final count. And after that… we’ll do what others didn’t have the courage to do: begin the moral, political, and economic reconstruction of Romania."
