Turin, 9 May (LaPresse) – The President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, has expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election. The Wafa news agency reported that, in his message, Abbas expressed ‘his heartfelt wishes for Pope Leo XIV's success in fulfilling his noble responsibilities and continuing the legacy of the late Pope Francis in promoting peace in the world.’ He then reaffirmed ‘the deep historical friendship between the State of Palestine and the Holy See and expressed his commitment to strengthening these ties in the service of humanity, justice and global peace.’ President Abbas also emphasised ‘the fundamental moral, religious and political role of the Holy See in supporting just causes, foremost among which is the right of the Palestinian people to freedom and independence.’
