Frankfurt (Germany), 9 May (LaPresse) – "Last night, I had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, who informed me of his plan for a 30-day ceasefire. I expressed my support for this idea. The German government also believes that a ceasefire is right, that it is the right way forward, and that Russia will now also be forced to accept a longer ceasefire, which will create the necessary space for a genuine peace plan. We are also in close contact with France, the United Kingdom, Poland and other European partners on this issue. The President of the European Council and I also discussed this this morning. We will work closely with our European partners to further support Ukraine, to help it defend itself effectively and to continue to put pressure on Russia. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference with European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels. ‘We call on Russia to now embark on a path towards lasting peace, and if this does not happen, we will not hesitate to increase the pressure of sanctions with our European partners and the United States,’ Merz added.
