Milan, 17 May (LaPresse) – ‘For us Germans, Italy is more than ever an indispensable strategic partner in European and foreign policy. We are two great industrial nations and closely linked through economic cooperation. There is great understanding between our two countries on all European policy issues.’ This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in remarks to the press alongside Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the end of their meeting at Palazzo Chigi. The two will also have a working dinner later. ‘Dear Giorgia, first of all, I would like to thank you warmly for this wonderful welcome here in Rome. I am truly happy to be here at the beginning of my term as chancellor, a clear sign that Germany and Italy have been united by a deep friendship for decades. We are both founding members of the EU, united by years, decades of cooperation, and I want this cooperation to continue and become even more intense,’ Merz began.
