Milan, 20 May (LaPresse) – The member states of the World Health Organisation (WHO) have today formally adopted the world's first Pandemic Agreement. The historic decision by the 78th World Health Assembly comes after more than three years of intense negotiations initiated by governments in response to the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and guided by the goal of making the world safer and more equitable in its response to future pandemics. Governments adopted the WHO Pandemic Agreement today in a plenary session of the World Health Assembly, the WHO's main decision-making body. The adoption followed yesterday's approval of the Agreement by a vote (124 in favour, 0 against, 11 abstentions) in the Commission by Member State delegations. The agreement sets out principles, approaches and tools for better international coordination across a wide range of sectors to strengthen the global health architecture for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. This includes equitable and timely access to vaccines, therapies and diagnostic tools.
