Rome, 24 May (LaPresse) – ‘In a society governed by the rule of law, no judiciary should be subject to political pressure. Institutions that protect fundamental rights cannot bow to political cycles. If they did, we would risk eroding the very stability for which they were created. The Court must not be used as a tool, either against governments or by them.’ This is stated in a passage from the response of Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, to the joint letter of 22 March 2025 in which, on the initiative of Denmark and Italy, nine member states of the Council of Europe, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, called for a “new and open dialogue” on how the European Court of Human Rights interprets the European Convention on Human Rights.
