Tokyo (Japan), 30 May (LaPresse/AP) – China will resume imports of Japanese fish products banned in 2023 due to concerns about the discharge of treated but slightly radioactive wastewater from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced that the two sides had reached an agreement after a meeting between Japanese and Chinese officials in Beijing and that imports would resume once the necessary paperwork had been completed. ‘Seafood is an important export product for Japan, and the resumption of exports to China is a crucial step,’ Koizumi said. However, officials said that the Chinese ban on agricultural and fish products from 10 Japanese prefectures, including Fukushima, is still in place and that they will continue to push for its lifting.
