New York (New York, USA), 30 May (LaPresse/AP) – New York police are investigating two officers who worked as security guards at a Manhattan house where an Italian tourist claims to have been kidnapped and tortured for weeks by two cryptocurrency investors who wanted to steal his Bitcoin. One of the police officers is part of Mayor Eric Adams' security detail and is believed to have picked up the victim from a local airport and taken him to the house, an official said. It is not immediately clear whether the other officer, who is a narcotics agent, has any connection to the case. The officers have been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Cryptocurrency investors John Woeltz and William Duplessie have been charged in the case. It is not uncommon for New York police officers to work as private security guards outside of their jobs with the city, but they must obtain prior approval. At this point, the official said, the department is looking into whether the officers received such approval.
