Washington, June 5 (LaPresse) – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a ban on issuing visas to foreign students set to begin studies at Harvard University. In an executive order signed Wednesday, Trump stated that allowing Harvard to continue admitting foreign students to its Cambridge, Massachusetts campus would jeopardize national security.
“I have determined that the entry of the class of foreign nationals described above is detrimental to the interests of the United States because, in my judgment, Harvard’s conduct has made it an unsuitable destination for foreign students and researchers,” Trump wrote in the order.
This marks a further escalation in the White House’s clash with the oldest and wealthiest university in the country. Last week, a federal court in Boston blocked the Department of Homeland Security from banning international students from entering Harvard. Trump’s order invokes a different legal authority.
The situation has recently escalated after the Department of Homeland Security claimed Harvard refused to provide documents related to misconduct by foreign students. Harvard argues it complied with the request, but the government deemed the university’s response inadequate.
