Paramount (United States), 8 June (LaPresse) – The White House plans to deploy 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles, where protests have been ongoing since yesterday with clashes between federal authorities and immigration protesters. The main unrest has been in the Paramount and Compton areas. The state governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, has said he is strongly opposed to the move and stated in a post on X that Republican President Donald Trump's decision is “deliberately inflammatory” and will only “increase tensions”. Since yesterday, federal immigration authorities have been conducting operations in several locations in Los Angeles, triggering protests from opponents. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency declined to provide details on its operations, saying it regularly arrests non-US citizens ‘who commit crimes and other individuals who have violated our country's immigration laws’.
