Milan, 11 June (LaPresse) – "For now, it's just an article in the Washington Post and there has been no official announcement. However, initial information from the Department of Homeland Security tells us that Guantanamo would be used for illegal immigrants from countries that do not accept repatriation, something that Italy has already told the American administration some time ago that it was willing to do, so there should be no possibility of Italians being taken to Guantanamo" and they would be taken back to Italy. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, guest of “Non stop news” on RTL 102.5, after the Washington Post reported that the Trump administration is preparing to start this week the transfer of potentially thousands of foreigners who are illegally in the United States to the US military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, specifying that among them there are also Italian citizens. The head of the Foreign Ministry added that a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. ‘A phone call with Secretary of State Rubio is already on the agenda for tomorrow afternoon, and I will try to get further clarification, but I don't think this is a situation to be dramatised because the Italians would be taken back to Italy,’ he said.
