Brussels, June 12 (LaPresse) – "Italy shares the objectives of the proposed regulation: to strengthen the protection of adults who, due to mental incapacity or impairment, are unable to look after their own interests." This was stated by the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, during his speech at the EU Justice Council in Luxembourg. "The government I am part of," he added, "has established a working group, which also includes the Minister of Justice, aimed at rationalizing the existing provisions on disability, possibly merging them into a single legislative text. The first results have been the establishment, starting January 1, 2025, of the National Authority for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the approval of a new legislative definition of disability, which recognizes the right of disabled persons to an autonomous and dignified life plan with full exercise of rights and participation in the social life of the country. A provision for revising the legal protection institutes contained in the Italian civil code is also under study. Therefore, we welcome the compromise text" and "we particularly appreciate the explicit reference to institutions that provide support and assistance to adults rather than solely protective measures."
