Milan, June 12 (LaPresse) – On board the Air India plane that crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport were 242 people, including 169 Indians, 53 British, one Canadian, and 7 Portuguese, the airline reported. "Air India confirms that flight AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved today in an accident after takeoff. The flight, which departed Ahmedabad at 13:38, carried 242 passengers and crew members aboard the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian citizens, 53 British, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese. The injured have been taken to the nearest hospitals," reads the Air India statement, which adds that the airline is cooperating with the authorities investigating the accident. "We have also activated a dedicated toll-free number for passengers, 1800 5691 444, to provide further information," the airline said.
