Brussels, June 12 (LaPresse) – “We need to increase our defense spending. We heard the German Chief of Defense Staff a couple of days ago say that by 2029-2030 Russia might be ready to attempt something against NATO territory. So now we are safe. We won’t be safe in three to five years, so we need to spend more,” said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the press conference following the Weimar+ Foreign Ministers meeting in Rome.

“Fortunately, it wasn’t only in 2014 that we took action. We considered a figure and then agreed on that figure. The new spending target is really based on an in-depth study we collectively conducted on the gaps in our capabilities and how we need to fill them. And the Defense Ministers agreed on this last Thursday, and now it’s up to the leaders to agree on the additional spending necessary to make all this possible,” he emphasized.
