Barcelona (Spain), 16 June (LaPresse/AP) – New protests against overtourism took place in Spain over the weekend. On Sunday in Barcelona and on the island of Mallorca, some protesters used water guns against tourists as they marched to demand a review of the economic model that they claim is fuelling a property crisis and distorting their hometowns. The marches were part of the first coordinated initiative by activists concerned about the ills of mass tourism in major southern European destinations. While several thousand people gathered in Mallorca, where the largest rally of the day took place, hundreds more gathered in other Spanish cities, as well as in Venice, Italy, and Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
