Dubai (United Arab Emirates), June 21 (LaPresse) – Iran has admitted for the first time to arresting a German cyclist on charges of espionage, likely as a means of exerting pressure on Germany in the context of the ongoing conflict with Israel. The semi-official Mehr news agency published images of the man’s arrest, though his name and the date of the detention were not disclosed.

The cyclist was reportedly arrested in Iran’s Markazi province, home to the Arak heavy water reactor. German news agency dpa reported that the arrest took place last year and that the man is currently being held in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, where many Western nationals and political prisoners are detained.

The German Foreign Ministry has so far declined to comment on the matter.
