Brussels, June 23 (LaPresse) – "We are meeting at a truly historic moment with significant and growing challenges to our security. As the world becomes more dangerous, allied leaders will make bold decisions to strengthen our collective defense, making NATO a stronger, fairer, and more lethal Alliance. This will include a new major defensive buildup plan, which will raise the benchmark for defense spending to 5% of GDP, a conservative effort to boost the defense industry across the Alliance." This is what NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said at the conference on the eve of the NATO summit in The Hague. "It will be necessary to effectively provide what we need, and it is fundamental that every ally takes on its fair share of the burden. The defense investment plan that allies will agree on in The Hague introduces a new baseline: 5% of GDP to be invested in defense. This is an ambitious, historic, and fundamental leap in quality to ensure our future. The new defense investment plan is the key outcome of this summit. It will be decisive in ensuring effective deterrence and defense," he emphasized.
