Milan, July 5 (LaPresse) – Eight months after the fall of the Assad regime, the United Kingdom has officially restored diplomatic relations with the Syrian government following today’s visit by the foreign minister to Damascus. This was announced in a statement by the British Foreign Office. Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized that the UK will support the Syrian government in fulfilling its commitments to building a safer and more prosperous future for Syrians, enhancing security in the region generally and within the UK itself. Lammy met with Syrian President Al‑Sharaa and Foreign Minister al‑Shaibani to stress the importance of an inclusive and representative political transition in Syria and to offer the UK’s continued support to the Syrian people. “A stable Syria is in the interest of the United Kingdom,” reads the Foreign Office note, “we want to ensure that Daesh’s territorial defeat endures and that it can never re‑emerge, and we want to prevent vulnerable Syrians from being exploited by human‑trafficking gangs across Europe. Building closer diplomatic partnerships with Syria is essential to safeguarding the United Kingdom’s security, in line with the Government’s Plan for Change.”
