The Hague (Netherlands), 25 July (LaPresse/AP) – A panel of three judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) has referred Hungary to the Court's monitoring body for failing to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to Budapest in April, stating that this decision compromised the Court's ability to bring suspects to justice. In a document published yesterday evening, the panel wrote that ‘the obligation to cooperate was sufficiently clear to Hungary’ and that the failure to arrest Netanyahu ‘seriously compromises the Court's ability to fulfil its mandate’. The ICC has no police force and relies on countries around the world to execute arrest warrants. The Court's oversight body, the Assembly of States Parties, has limited powers to sanction Hungary. It will consider the next steps to be taken at its annual meeting in December.
