San Salvador (El Salvador), 1 August (LaPresse/AP) – The party of El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, has approved constitutional amendments in the country's Legislative Assembly that will allow for indefinite presidential re-election and extend the president's term to six years. Deputy Ana Figueroa of the “Nuevas Ideas” party had proposed changing five articles of the Constitution, including the elimination of the second round of elections, in which the two candidates with the most votes in the first round face off. “Nuevas Ideas” and its allies in the Legislative Assembly quickly approved the proposals with the qualified majority they hold. The vote passed with 57 votes in favour and three against. Bukele was re-elected by a landslide last year after Supreme Court judges, chosen by his party despite a constitutional ban, ruled in 2021 to allow him to run for a second five-year term.
