Milan, August 6 (LaPresse) – The residence permit of the man of Moroccan origin who lit a cigarette at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris will be revoked by French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. This was announced today by the ministry to broadcaster BFMTV.
The man was arrested and taken into custody after lighting his cigarette on Monday using the flame of the commemorative monument.
In France, the violation or desecration of a monument erected in memory of the deceased is punishable under Article 225-17 of the Penal Code, as is the desecration of graves, burial sites, or funeral urns.
The man, born in 1978, now faces up to one year in prison and a €15,000 fine.
“This disgraceful and despicable act offends the memory of those who died for France,” Retailleau wrote in a post on X.
