Washington, August 19 (LaPresse) – “We have made concrete progress.” This was stated by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the end of the summit in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, and six other EU leaders.

“Today’s meeting was positive and constructive, and there was a real sense of unity among the European leaders present,” Starmer added. “We achieved two concrete outcomes.

The first, on the issue of security guarantees, was the agreement that the coalition of willing countries—30 nations already cooperating on security guarantees—will now work with the United States to coordinate these guarantees. Our teams have already been tasked with carrying out further detailed work on this. This is really important for security in Ukraine, in Europe, and in the United Kingdom.”

“The second concrete result,” Starmer continued, “was the agreement that will now lead to a bilateral meeting between President (Russian) Putin and President Zelensky. This came after a phone call between President Trump and President Putin in the afternoon, followed by a trilateral meeting, which President Trump will later join.

This is a recognition of the principle that on some of these issues—whether territory, prisoner exchanges, or the very serious matter of the return of children—Ukraine must be at the negotiating table.”
