Miami (California), 22 August. (LaPresse/AP) – A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction blocking further expansion of the immigration detention centre built in the middle of the Florida Everglades and nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz”, which must close within 60 days to comply with environmental laws. Environmental groups and the Miccosukee tribe argue that the project violates environmental laws and threatens the delicate wetlands. The centre, built almost two months ago, currently houses several hundred detainees but could expand to hold up to 3,000. The lawsuit alleges that the state and federal governments failed to comply with environmental regulations.
