Brussels, Aug. 28 (LaPresse) – The European Commission has presented two proposals paving the way for the implementation of the EU-US joint statement of August 21, 2025, on tariffs. The first proposal concerns the elimination of duties on US industrial products and guarantees preferential market access for a range of non-sensitive US fish and agricultural products. The second extends the tariff exemption for lobster, now including processed lobster.

“These proposals represent the first steps towards this implementation and ensure the United States grants a tariff exemption for the vital EU automotive sector retroactively from August 1,” the Commission stated. “The Commission will continue to work with the United States to reduce tariffs, also in the context of negotiations on a future EU-US agreement on fair and balanced reciprocal trade,” the note added.

The Commission’s proposals constitute the legislative step necessary to implement the EU tariff reductions set out in Section 1 of the EU-US Joint Statement. The European Parliament and the Council must now approve the two proposals through the ordinary legislative procedure before the EU tariff reductions can take effect. In line with Section 3 of the EU-US Joint Statement, the United States is expected to apply the agreed US tariff cap of 15% for EU cars and automotive components.
