Washington (US), 28 August (LaPresse) – The Trump administration has announced restrictions on visas granted to students, journalists and other categories of foreign visitors. ‘For too long, previous administrations have allowed foreign students and other visa holders to remain in the United States virtually indefinitely, posing security risks, costing taxpayers untold sums of money and disadvantaging US citizens,’ a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement. ‘Under President Trump's proposed rule,’ the DHS statement reads, "the federal government would establish authorised admission and extension periods for foreign students and exchange visitors up to the duration of the programme in which they are participating, not to exceed four years. The rule would set the initial admission period for foreign media representatives at a maximum of 240 days. Foreign media representatives would be eligible for an extension period of up to 240 days, but not exceeding the duration of the temporary activity or assignment."
