Athens (Greece), Sept 7 (LaPresse) – Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has presented a tax cut package worth 1.6 billion euros, which includes a series of reductions affecting around 4 million citizens, in a keynote speech delivered yesterday at the Thessaloniki International Fair.

The Greek head of government traditionally outlines economic policies for the coming year at the fair every September, highlighting achievements. In last year’s speech, Mitsotakis had said: “I did not come with a bag full of gifts.” This year’s speech, however, mainly focused on ‘gifts’ aimed at increasing incomes as much as possible.

Mitsotakis himself estimated the beneficiaries to be around 4 million: the middle class, young people, large families, pensioners, and others. The goal, he said while presenting the package, is to increase disposable income amid persistent inflation and to address the country’s low birth rate by supporting young people and large families.

It was clear that Mitsotakis was also thinking about the upcoming national elections, which must be held by July 2027. The conservatives are expected to win but without reaching a parliamentary majority.
