Rome, 8 September (LaPresse) – "We will defend our presence within the UN mandate as much as possible. If the UN decides to withdraw it, I will propose to Parliament an extension of Italy's bilateral mission, because we cannot abandon a people.‘ This was stated by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony for the 82nd anniversary of the Defence of Rome, to those asking about the UNIFIL mission. ’We were there because we thought it was useful. We can do it on our own, without the force of the UN. But we could do it if necessary,“ added Crosetto. 'A nation must know how to take responsibility, even on its own. It is not my choice, but it is my choice to propose to the government and Parliament that they consider whether the UN mission will be interrupted, which I hope will not happen”. For Crosetto, therefore, ‘we are continuing our mission because we are increasingly convinced that it is necessary. We are convinced that multinational intervention is the only solution in crisis areas such as this, and it will also be the case in Gaza and could also be the case in Ukraine.’
