Kathmandu (Nepal), 13 September. (LaPresse/AP) – Nepalese President Ram Chandra Poudel has dissolved parliament and set 5 March as the date for new elections. The last elections were held in 2022. Poudel's decision is based on the recommendation of the new interim prime minister, former Supreme Court President Sushila Karki. She is the first woman to lead the Himalayan nation's government after violent protests caused the previous government to collapse. Karki, a popular figure while serving as the sole president of the Supreme Court in 2016 and 2017 for her stance against corruption in government, was sworn in yesterday during a small ceremony at the presidential residence, broadcast on state television. Some MPs tried to impeach the 73-year-old in April 2017, accusing her of bias, but the move was unsuccessful and was criticised as an attack on the judiciary.
