Miami (USA), Sept. 16 (LaPresse) – The Trump administration has added Colombia to the list of nations that do not cooperate in the war on drugs. This decision, the first in nearly 30 years, targets a traditional US ally in Latin America and reflects the recent surge in cocaine production and the deterioration of relations between the White House and Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Although it was determined that Colombia had not met its international obligations in the fight against drugs, the Trump administration issued a waiver on sanctions that would have resulted in significant aid cuts, citing vital US national interests. President Gustavo Petro criticized Trump’s decision during a televised cabinet meeting, stating that Colombia was being penalized after sacrificing the lives of "dozens of police officers, soldiers, and ordinary citizens in an effort to prevent cocaine from reaching the United States."
