Washington (USA), 18 October (LaPresse/AP) – From New York to Washington, Boston to Chicago and hundreds of other smaller towns, thousands of people gathered across the United States for the “No Kings” mobilisation to protest against the direction taken by the country under Donald Trump's presidency. The “no kings” demonstrations have been dubbed “Hate America” marches by the Republican Party. Demonstrators march behind signs reading “Nothing is more patriotic than protesting” or “Resist fascism” and the atmosphere is festive, in many cases with marching bands. This is the third mass mobilisation since Trump's return to the White House and comes against the backdrop of a government shutdown that has not only blocked federal programmes and services but is also testing the fundamental balance of powers, with an aggressive executive clashing with Congress and the courts in ways that, according to the organisers, represent a drift towards authoritarianism. Trump is spending the weekend at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. ‘They say they call me king. I am not a king,’ he said in an interview with Fox News.
