Washington (US), 27 October (LaPresse) – Donald Trump has once again refused to rule out running for a third presidential term, even though it would be unconstitutional. However, the president has also proposed a possible candidacy for Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking to reporters accompanying him on his trip to Asia, the president said he had the “best numbers in the polls”. However, he added that if Rubio and Vance “formed a team”, they would be “unstoppable”. But the president added again: “I would very much like to do it. I have my best numbers ever”. Pressed on the possibility of ruling out a third term, Trump replied, ‘I'm not ruling it out. You tell me.’ Trump and his allies have repeatedly hinted at a third term for the president, who has already been elected twice. However, the 22nd Amendment states that ‘no person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice.’ Trump had previously stated in a conversation with NBC News that there were ‘methods’ by which he could serve another term, such as Vance running for president and then handing over the reins to him. The Twelfth Amendment, however, provides another potential safeguard. It states that ‘no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.’ .
