Frankfurt (Germany), 7 Nov. (LaPresse) – Germany is running for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the two-year period 2027-2028, with the aim of “strengthening the UN's role as a guarantor of world peace”. This was stated by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in his speech to the Bundestag on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the UN. ‘The United Nations remains indispensable, but it must be reformed to reflect the realities of the 21st century,’ Wadephul said, stressing the need to give greater weight to the global South and Africa. The minister recalled that Russia's aggression against Ukraine ‘undermines European security’ and that the crises in the Middle East and Sudan ‘demonstrate how much effective multilateral institutions are needed.’ Wadephul then proposed a strong Security Council mandate for the stabilisation of Gaza as a sign of the UN's capacity for action. The German minister also reiterated Germany's commitment to ‘neither withdraw politically nor financially’ from the United Nations. ‘We must show that the international community can still act together,’ he concluded.
