Frankfurt (Germany), 9 December (LaPresse) – ‘We have, of course, taken note of the statements made by the American president. I would like to reiterate that, from our point of view, just as German and European companies in the United States must comply with local laws – and, if necessary, face very severe penalties – American companies in Europe must also accept our rules.’ This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, responding to a question about US President Donald Trump's criticism of the European Union for fining Elon Musk's social media platform X. "If they do not comply, there are, of course, instruments in Germany and Europe to apply sanctions. Such measures can be challenged in court. In a state governed by the rule of law, and in a legal community such as the European Union, this applies to all companies: not only European, but also American and those from any other country,‘ Merz added, emphasising that ’this is the legal framework. This is the system within which we operate here in Europe, and it applies fully and equally to all companies."
